Obituary for Albert Warren Stokes, Jr.

Albert Warren Stokes, Jr., “Warren” peacefully passed away on March 24, 2018 in Oklahoma City after a courageous battle with cancer. Warren was born March 16, 1947 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Warren is survived by his wife and partner of 32 years, Jane Shipley; his stepson, Justin Shipley; his daughter, Theresa Stokes Hanszen (Kent); his grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, Sam, and Iris; and two special nephews, Bucky and Jeff Harris.

Warren was preceded in death by his loving son, Albert Warren “Trae” Stokes, III, and his parents, Albert Warren Stokes, Sr. and Marion Lucille Horne Wert.

Warren was raised in Laguna Beach California. Upon graduating from Laguna Beach High School, he attended college before joining the Army. Warren was a member of the 1st Cavalry Division and served as a Captain in the US Army as a Helicopter Pilot. He piloted a Cobra Attack Helicopter during combat missions in Vietnam, logging over 216 hours of combat flight time. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Air Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars and several others. After the war, he took command of a battery of the 4th Battalion 14th Artillery Division out of Fort Sill, Oklahoma from his brother-in-law and fellow pilot, Captain Roger Harris. Warren served his country with pride and distinction and helped train multitudes of young soldiers. After almost 10 years in the Army, Warren was honorably discharged.

Following his discharge, Warren earned a B.S. degree in Business Administration and Economics from the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. He then entered the restaurant business where he enjoyed many years working as the Manager for Crystal’s Pizza & Spaghetti. Thereafter, he took a civilian job at Tinker Air Force base where he was a friend and mentor to many during his 23 years of service.
Warren was known for his wonderful sense of humor, his wittiness, and his appreciation and interest in art and music. Warren would tell some of the best stories, which would usually leave you laughing. Warren loved to travel and experience new things. He also had a true love for the beach, where he enjoyed many of his happiest times. He was an avid reader and knowledge seeker and spent his life seeking out new information, thoughts, and ideas. As much as he loved these things, he loved his furry friends, Nikko, Bailey and Lilly more, and surely, they will miss him, too.

Warren will be dearly missed by all who knew him. A celebration of his life will be 2PM, Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home.

Memorials donations may be made to V.F.W. Post 1317, 811 E. Macarthur St., Shawnee, OK 74804.
