Claire “Cuby” L. Powell, 68, departed from this world to be with our Lord on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at her home in Midwest City OK, surrounded by family and friends, after a two year battle with cancer. Viewing will be from 12PM-8PM Tuesday with family present from 5PM-7PM at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home. A Funeral service to celebrate Claire’s life will be held Wednesday, May 23, 2018, at the Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church, SW 89th Street, OKC, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be at the Frederick Memorial Cemetery, Frederick, OK, at 3:00 p.m.

She was a faithful member of the Union Primitive Baptist Church, Grandfield, OK, and loved singing acapella “Shape Note” and “Sacred Harp” gospel hymns. She took private voice lessons as a child, and sang in many choirs. For 20 years she and Nancy taught “shape note” singing to children.

Claire was born August 7, 1949, in Frederick OK, daughter of Howard W. and Lois I. (Thompson) Powell. She grew up on a farm near Walters, OK, along with her older sister, Nancy J. Powell. Claire learned many homemaking skills from her Mother and Grandmother, while Nancy worked on the farm with their Father. She graduated from Walters High School in 1967 and from Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in 1970 with a Bachelor’s degree in Home Economics. She received her Master’s degree from Oklahoma State University in 1977 in Family & Consumer Sciences.

She first taught Home Economics in Altus, OK, for three years, then began a 32-year career in the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service as an Extension Home Economist. She worked in Oklahoma and Cleveland counties with the 4-H & Youth program, and in Creek and Grady counties then back in Oklahoma County with the adult program. She was an outstanding Extension Educator, receiving the Distinguished Service Award, Continued Excellence Award, Extension Educator of the Year and Cleo Bryan Award from the Oklahoma and National Association of Extension Home Economics/Family & Consumer Science. She researched and developed many programs in foods-nutrition, home management, sewing for profit entrepreneurship, and healthy grocery store tours. She served as advisor for Extension Homemakers/Home & Community Education in her county for most of these years. She retired in 2003. She was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Faithful Extension Workers, and Oklahoma Retired Teachers Association.

She and Nancy lived together beginning in 1985, and bought their first and only home together 33 years ago where they live today. She was an excellent seamstress and cook, and county fair judge. Loving to travel, she made numerous trips with coworkers and her sister, Nancy. She and Nancy have been to all 50 states. One of her greatest passions was supporting and traveling to watch the OU Women’s Basketball Team, being a member of the OU Fast Break Club. She and Nancy won the first “6th Man” Award in 2011-12 from OU Women’s Basketball. She loved dachshunds, and she and Nancy have had 6 loveable companions, including her current dog, Heidi. She collected antique glassware, and antiqued everywhere. For many years she had a booth selling antique glassware in Little Rock, AR.
Preceding her in death are her grandparents and parents, cousins, Doris Dean and Charles Hough. She is survived by her sister, Nancy, and their 3 “adopted” grandboys, Kade, Kasen, and Kole Turner, as well as, Mother, Toni. Also surviving are cousins, Patsy Bell, Georgetown TX, Jim John Thompson, Peachtree City GA, and Gary Castleberry, Indiahoma OK; and a host of friends and coworkers.
