Obituary for DeAnn Kay Stephens

DeAnn Kay Stephens, 79, of Midwest City, died suddenly November 28, 2017. She was born September 14, 1938 in Red Wing, Minnesota to Norris and Florence Erickson.

At the age of 11, she lost her mother in a house fire. With the help of her grandparents, her father raised DeAnn and her little sister, Luana, in their hometown of Zumbrota, Minnesota. She graduated from Zumbrota High School in 1956. She gained another mom when her dad married Isabelle Braaten in 1958.

At the age of 19, she moved on her own to Dayton, Ohio to begin a career in civil service. It was there she met her husband, Airman Donald Stephens. They married in Zumbrota in May 1959. Their first child, Robyn Lee, was born in Dayton in January 1961. Their son, Mark Gregory, was born in Sacramento, California in November 1967. They lived the military life of many moves while she happily raised her kids. When the family moved to Oklahoma in 1975, DeAnn resumed her civil service career, retiring in 2002 after 32 years of government service.

Her retirement years were filled with her beloved grandchildren, Katie, Caleb, Ally, and Hadyn, never missing a moment to be an incredible Nana. DeAnn loved to travel with her family and friends. She was an active member of the Oklahoma Retired Citizens Travel Club. It would be easier to list the places she hasn’t visited then those she has.

DeAnn was preceded in death by her parents; her former husband and best friend, Don; and stepbrother, Obert Braaten.

She leaves behind her daughter Robyn and husband Gene Fountain; son Mark and wife Kim Stephens; grandkids, Katie, Caleb, Ally, and Hadyn, all of Midwest City. She is also survived by her sister/best friend, Luana Skibiel of Idaho; stepbrothers Orgene and Robert Braaten; stepsister Vicki Arendt, all of Minnesota. Also missing her are Stephens family, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends

A memorial service will be 1:00 P.M., Friday, December 8, 2017 at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home Chapel.
