Obituary for Dorothy A. Thayer-Jones

Dorothy A. Thayer-Jones passed away peacefully at home with her family on January 29, 2018. She was born in Champaign, Illinois December 3, 1924, the oldest daughter of Chester and Melissa Dyson. The family moved to Lafayette, Indiana during the depression. Her father passed away in 1940 and Dorothy, her sister and mother then moved back to Illinois. Dorothy graduated from Champaign High School in 1942 and worked at Sears for five years. When her fiancée, Gordon Thayer returned from WWII and the South Pacific they married in 1945. After her husband’s discharge from the Navy they moved to Indiana for a short time, but due to a labor strike returned to Illinois and ultimately to Midwest City, Oklahoma in 1955. Dorothy stayed at home to care for their 3 children. During that time she was active in the PTA, Scouts, taught Sunday school for 30 years and served as WMU Director.
In 1970 she was hired as the Staff Children’s Director at First Baptist Church Midwest City, Oklahoma. In 1971 she was hired as the Mission Friends and Girls in Action Consultant in the WMU Department of the Baptist General Convention of Oklahoma where she served for 18 ½ years before retiring in 1989. Her husband Gordon died in 1980 and she remarried in 1985 to Joe Jones with whom she lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her husband Joe died in 2006 and Dorothy continued volunteer work at their church in Bethany until 2009 when she moved back to Midwest City rejoining the First Baptist Church Midwest City. There she joined WMU where she served as the Prayer chairman for several years.
She is survived by her children, Sandra Springer, husband Elgin; retired LtCol Arthur Thayer, wife Debbie; Robert Thayer, wife Dena; Randy Jones, wife Pam and Lisa Jones; 9 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and a special friend Bill Turney. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, stepfather W.J. Doxey, sister retired LtCol Barbara Dyson and grandson Bo Martin-Thayer.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 1, 2018 from 8am to 8pm with family greeting friends from 6-8pm. Funeral service will be 10am, Friday, February 2, 2018 at First Baptist Church Midwest City. Interment to follow at Arlington Memory Gardens in Midwest City. In lieu of flowers request donations be made to the First Baptist Building Fund.
