Obituary for Earl W. Childress

Earl W. Childress was wrapped in the arms of angels on Saturday. Earl was preceded in death by, Verdeen, his wife of 56 years: his mother & father, Martin & Emma Childress; 6 brothers, Harvey, Lewis, Author, Charlie, Carl & Floyd; & two step-children, Paula & Randy. He is survived by his sister & brother-in-law, James & Opal Watson; his step-daughter, Carma & husband Harry; his step-son, Phill & wife, Jean; 16 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren and many adoring nieces and nephews. Earl is a veteran of WWII and Korea. Services at 1 PM, Thursday at Barnes & Friederich. Graveside services at 3 PM, Resthaven Memory Gardens.
Earl was one of the greatest generation, serving in the Army during WWII and in the Air Force during the Korean War. He grew up on a farm in Garvin County, often worked in California before WWII, but always returned to Oklahoma to be with his family. He met, Verdeen, in Pauls Valley in 1954. They married in Oct 1955, and began their life with $400 and a new Ford. He loved to fish, read, and traveled a great deal in the US, Bahamas and Old Mexico. His favorite trip was one to Mexico where he regretted not being able to muster enough nerve to go “skyriding”.
Described by his sister in law as the smartest one in their school, Earl often surprised friends and family with the ability to recite lengthy poetry word for word up until his passing. An avid story and joke teller, those who were blessed to hear them were often mesmerized with stories about his experiences in WWII, Korea, his travels and experiences on the farm.
Earl is blessed with having many loving friends and family who were the joy of his life. The family would like to thank the residents, and caregivers of FountainrBrook Assisted Living for giving Earl a warm, loving experience the last year of his life.
