Obituary for Joanna Marie Matherly

Joanna “Jo” Matherly, our devoted and spunky mother, grandma and grandnana, passed away on the sunny Sunday morning of September 24. Jo was larger than life, loved her family deeply and had an endlessly generous heart. She smiled with her whole face. Jo was born in Sapulpa on January 24, 1930. She went on to spend much of her life in Edmond and Midwest City. It was in Midwest City that she raised her three children Carol, Dale and Linda. She spent time in Edmond first as a child and later as a grandma where she would often have her eight grandchildren over to swim in the backyard.

In every facet of her life, she demonstrated that she absolutely did not agree that less is more. She gave unconditionally, hosted the best parties and always made too much food for Sunday dinner. One of her great joys in life was cooking for her family. No fried chicken could hold a candle to hers and you have never had apple pie like Jo Matherly’s apple pie. And while she did pass down her recipes and even once spent an afternoon holding apple pie school with her daughters and granddaughters, she never really measured anything and almost always left something out of her written recipes. Holiday traditions and birthdays were sacred events for Jo. When it was your birthday, you could bet it would start with a happy birthday serenade from her. She spent time picking the exact right card, usually a musical one. And she made sure just the right meal was had, whether she made you strawberry cake and chicken fried steak or took you for a nice brunch. Christmas was celebrated the entire month of December. She loved ballroom dancing and actively took lessons and competed for nearly 20 years.

Jo was generous in every way. If there was someone in need, she was always right there to fill in that need and probably just a little more. She volunteered her time and opened her home and heart to many people and causes including Hospital Pink Ladies, Contact Crisis Hotline and St. Joseph’s Children’s Home. It was her vision that gave birth to Mid-Del Group Homes, an agency that serves adults with developmental disabilities. Without her determination it would not exist.

Jo is survived by daughter, Carol Wilson and husband Larry; son, Dale Matherly and wife Beth; daughter, Linda Kastner and husband Keyton; grandchildren, Darrell Wilson and wife Shelli, Shanda Caldwell and husband Jim, Tracy Gasbarra and husband Louis, Joshua Wilson, Jacob Matherly and wife Melissa, Lindsey Bond and husband Ryan, Erin Rosas and husband Mario and Angela Mustachio and husband Jeremy; and her beloved cat, Rowdy.

Seventeen great-grandchildren have had the pleasure of being part of a four-generation family with Jo as the proud matriarch. They always looked forward to taking their Grandnana out for dinner. All would joke, “Grandnana orders everything on the menu.” She felt like you needed a bite of everything.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 7 at Wickline United Methodist Church in Midwest City. The family would like to thank the staff at Hospice Quality Care for their compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mid-Del Group Homes or the Regional Food Bank.
