Obituary for Joe E. Phillips

Joe Edward Phillips, 81 passed away August 22, 2017. The son of Edward E. and Charlotte Ann (Anna) Phillips was born December 4, 1935 in Wetumka, Oklahoma.

Joe retired from the Mid-Del School District in 1995 after teaching and coaching for 37 years at Midwest City High School and Carl Albert Jr. High.

Joe was a professional. He loved to teach, especially Oklahoma History. He loved Oklahoma and traveled the state to see firsthand what he read about in history books. He attempted to inspire in his students that same “okie” pride.

Joe moved to the Midwest City area with his family in the early 40’s and lived the rest of his life there. He graduated from Midwest City High School in 1954. He attended Tulsa University on a football scholarship for two years before transferring to Central State College in Edmond, OK. He graduated in 1958 with a Bachelors of Education. He later returned to CSC to obtain his Masters of Teaching in 1964.

Joe was ordained as a Deacon by Crestview Baptist Church where he taught Adult Sunday School for many years.

After retirement, Joe applied for and received his favorite job as “nanny” to his grandson, Tyler Black.

Surviving Joe are his wife of 60 years, Barbara; two children, Cheryl S. Black and husband Stephen Black and Joe Edward Phillips, Jr. and his wife Lorna. He is also survived by four grandchildren, Tyler Black, Brian Phillips, Brady Phillips and Amy Phillips ; great-grandchildren, Kelsey Alvarez, Kyndal Phillips, Jesse Phillips, Caleb Hyath and Peri Norman.
