Obituary for Russell Arthur Mears

Russell A. (Russ) Mears of Del City, Oklahoma went home to be with his Heavenly Father on March 6, 2017. He was 73 years old. Russ was born on March 2, 1944 in Jeannette, Pennsylvania to Robert Edward and Florence Mae Mears. After graduation from Jeanette Senior High School in 1962, he entered the United States Air Force, where he became an air traffic controller. His assignments included Selfridge AFB in Michigan, Hawn Air Base in Germany, Shaw AFB in South Carolina, Tan Son Nhut Air Base in Saigon, Vietnam, Kelly AFB in Texas, Thule Air Base in Greenland, FAA Fort Worth Air Route Traffic Control Center in Euless, Texas, Nellis AFB in Nevada, Spangdalem Air Base in Germany and Minot AFB in North Dakota. He earned the rank of "Chief Master Sergeant", which is only awarded to 2% of the enlisted force. After 25 1/2 years, he retired from the Air Force to begin a civilian career in the aviation industry. He worked for the Washington Consulting Group in Miami, Florida as an Air Traffic Control Instructor, and Contract Site Supervisor. He was selected to work in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma as the Contract Director and later worked as the Quality Control Manager for the Aviation Division. When the Washington Consultant Group office closed in 2011, Russ decided to retire the second time. Russ was a devoted father of Mike and Jeff Mears. Together they enjoyed watching movies, making jokes, participating in scavenger hunts and engaging in other fun activities. Russ enjoyed family vacations with his boys, Jeff's wife, Ashley Mears, Dianne, her daughters Cindy Johnson and Kerry Strawn as well as their families. Family vacations always included Dianne's mother, Meme. After his second retirement, Russ and his wife, Dianne lived at their home in Del City, Oklahoma and traveled throughout the United States. He was a member of Wickline United Methodist Church, active in the Seekers Sunday School Class and sang in the choir. As a youth, Russ earned his Eagle Scout rank. During his careers, Russ was involved in the Scouting movement and performed as Scoutmaster of Troop 202 in Germany, Scoutmaster of Troop 363 in South Carolina, Cubmaster of Pack 160 in Florida, Committee Chairman for Troop 160 in Florida and Committeeman for Pack 3279 in Oklahoma. Interment will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2017 at 10 a.m. at the Westmoreland County Cemetery in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Wickline United Methodist Church, 417 Mid-America Blvd. Midwest City, Oklahoma 73110.
