Obituary for Denny A. DeLaughter

Dennis “Denny” Albert DeLaughter, 66, of Midwest City, died October 25, 2018. He was born June 8, 1952 in Decatur, Illinois to Charlotte and August DeLaughter.

Denny moved to OKC in 1967. He met the love of his life, Velma, while attending Capitol Hill Junior High school. Denny and Velma have been together for over 50 years. They began dating August 1968 and married September 3, 1971. Denny joined the Air Force Reserves in 1972; he served 6 years.

Denny and Velma had two daughters, Tiffany and Mandi. Denny gained two son-in-laws, Donnell and Ophie - then came three granddaughters; Morgan, Kenadee and Parker. Denny was a loving and devoted husband, dad, PaPa and a friend to all. Family was everything to Denny.

Denny loved spending time with his family; having family cookouts, attending his granddaughters’ events and activities. He loved watching Kenadee and Parker dance at their recitals and dance competitions. Denny was so very proud of Morgan when she started college at the University of Oklahoma. He was the best PaPa in the world as he would swim, play board games, color and play with toys with his granddaughters every time he saw them.

Denny was a musician and loved country music; he had his own band, and played publicly for over 12 years. Denny picked and sang for us at any and all occasions. Denny and Velma enjoyed social activities, dancing and bowling with friends. Denny was a hoot! Always smiling, laughing and joking around. Denny had a big heart. He would do anything for anyone and always there for family and friends. He was the go-to person for everyone in his family from his mom to his all of his special nieces and nephews. A genuine “people” person; could talk to anyone like he knew them for years.

Denny was a glazier, working with glass for 47 years, completing interior, exterior, and custom glasswork. Denny had recently come out of retirement working at Lowe’s Home Improvement, which was right up his alley. He truly provided good old fashion customer service; his coworkers loved him as did his customers!

There wasn’t much Denny couldn’t do. He loved fixing and repairing things and was a great carpenter. Denny enjoyed doing his own home improvements and building phenomenal pieces of furniture for his loved ones.

Denny was preceded in death by his dad, Augie DeLaughter; his brother, Terry DeLaughter; and his sister Vicki Carpenter.

Denny is survived by his wife, of 47 years, Velma of the home; daughter, Tiffany and husband, Donnell Smith of Oklahoma City; daughter, Mandi and husband Ophie Cox of Choctaw; 3 grandchildren, Morgan, Kenadee and Parker Smith; mother, Charlotte Foster of Midwest City; brother, Mike DeLaughter of Midwest City, brother, Jeff DeLaughter of Decatur, IL, half-brother, Zane DeLaughter, half-brother, Joseph DeLaughter and numerous special nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held to celebrate Denny’s life at 11AM, Tuesday, October 30, 2018 at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Choctaw Oklahoma.
