Obituary for George L. Budde

George L. Budde was born in Ontario, WI on October 21st, 1921 to William and Carrie Budde. He made his final flight on September 21st, 2018 – exactly one month shy of completing 97 trips around the sun. George was raised on the Budde family farm with three brothers and three sisters, where he learned the importance of a good work ethic and self-discipline. Growing up, he was an accomplished athlete which fueled his avid love of sports and competition throughout his life.

In 1945, George began his military career with the United States Army Air Corps. One year later, George married Anadell Johnson of Wisconsin. George’s military service would give them the opportunity to live in several different states. They finally settled in Midwest City in 1958 where they would raise their four children, Harlan, Lynn, Billy, and Jill. After Anadell’s passing in 1976, George and his sons formed Budde Air Racing, to compete in George’s true passion - International Formula 1 (IF1) air racing. He was a revered pilot and mentor during and after his involvement with IF1.

During his military career, George served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam War. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with the Air National Guard. His accomplishments included completing 100 missions in the Korean Conflict, receiving his Mach I pin, and 24,000 hours of PIC flying. He held various aviation jobs including civilian flight instructor, airline pilot, crop duster, and FAA DC-9 flight instructor. Over the course of his aviation career he flew more than 300 different types of aircraft.

In 1979, George married Patsy Jarnagin in Midwest City where they made their home until her passing in 2014.

George loved dancing, watching sports of most any kind - especially the Oklahoma City Thunder, and nothing brought a bigger smile to his face than children. We all aspire to follow his example to work hard, enter the room with a positive attitude, and be a “giver, not a taker”.
George was preceded in death by his parents, William and Carrie Budde; brother, Theron Budde; sisters, Marjorie Spina and Maxine Turk; second wife, Patsy Budde; and daughter-in-law, Debbie Budde. He has joyously joined the “love of his life” and mother of his children, Anadell, for eternity. George will be missed by his brothers Bob and Richard Budde and sister Betty Ann Pohl, his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a host of family and friends, and his “C.E. Page squadron”.

The family will greet friends Wednesday, September 26, 2018 from 6PM to 8PM at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held Thursday, September 27, 2018 at 11:00 AM in the Barnes Friederich Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Arlington Memory Gardens.

Guests attending visitation or George’s service are encouraged to wear red, white and blue to honor his love of America.

The Budde family would like to express our sincere gratitude for the wonderful staff at the Fountain Brook Assisted Living. We are grateful for the services of Frontier Hospice, Chaplain Tim, and especially for the love and care shown by Tanarria. We are also forever grateful for the TLC shown to George and all of us from our “sister” Mary Ann Easom.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Folds of Honor or the Wounded Warrior Project.
