Obituary for Leroy Franklin Ireton

Leroy F. Ireton was born on a farm near Leedey, OK, to Walter E. and Julia E. Hughes Ireton. He passed into the presence of his Lord and Savior on December 14, 2018. Leroy was 82 years old. He was a loving husband to his wife of 59 ½ years and a devoted father to his children. He loved doing things with his grandsons and his great granddaughter was his delight.

Leroy accepted the Lord as his Savior at an early age. He lived his faith for the remainder of his life. He taught Sunday School at Central High Baptist Church in Marlow, OK, and Meadowood Baptist Church in Midwest City, OK. He was ordained as a Deacon at Meadowood in 1984 and served on many committees.

Leroy believed strongly in public education. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree at Southwestern Oklahoma State University, he began his teaching career at Choctaw/Nicoma Park Public Schools. He also was high school principal and teacher at Ryan, OK; Lubbock, TX; and Central High School, Marlow, OK. He began working at the Oklahoma State Department of Education from which he retired as Associate State Superintendent of Education, Federal Programs. During his working career he continued his education earning a Master of Science in Math from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, and a Doctorate of Education from the University of Oklahoma.

After retiring, he and Delores did a lot of traveling, most often with Gene and Shelby Clayton. They also became very involved with OK Campers on Mission whose members volunteered to build or renovate churches and church related facilities. This work continued for several years until Leroy’s health prevented his participation.

He and Delores spent winters in Pharr, TX for twenty plus years and developed many lasting friendships with people all across the U.S. and Canada. They also went to the First Baptist Church of Edinburg, TX, where the Adult III Bible Fellowship Class was special to them.

Leroy is survived by his wife, Delores; his son, Roy and wife Dianne; daughter, Jana and husband Tom Ruedy; grandsons, Justin Ireton, William Ireton and wife Misty; great granddaughter, Madilyn Ireton; brother, Elmer and wife Marie of Uvalde, TX; brother in laws, Charles Yohn of Norman, Ken Lanier and wife Ellen of Georgia; & many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Verlene Yohn.

Viewing will be from 8AM-8PM Monday with family present from 6PM-8PM at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home.

Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, December 18, at Meadowood Baptist Church in Midwest City, OK. Burial will be at the Elmwood Cemetery in Choctaw, OK. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Oklahoma Baptist Homes for Children or Meadowood Baptist Church Master’s Market.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mercy Home Health nurses, especially Teresa and Rhonda.
