Nancy Jane Powell, 71, departed from this world to be with our Lord on Saturday, April 20, 2019, in Midwest City OK, surrounded by family and friends. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 26, 2019, at the Barnes Friederich Funeral Home , 1820 S. She took piano lessons as a child, and sang in many choirs. For 20 years Nancy and her sister Claire taught "shape note" singing to children at an annual camp.
Nancy was born June 6, 1947, in Frederick OK, daughter of Howard W. and Lois I. (Thompson) Powell. She grew up in the Ahpeatone Community north of Cookietown on a farm, along with her parents and younger sister, Claire L. Powell. Nancy drove the tractor on the farm raising wheat with their Daddy. She preferred cowboy games with guns while Claire loved to play with baby dolls. However, they both loved to play school! Her Mother was her first English teacher for three years while she was in high school. She graduated from Big Pasture High School, Randlett,OK, in 1965 and from Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts in 1968 with a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education. She completed her Science certification at Central State University, Edmond, in 1973.
She first taught Science and Physical Education in Moss, OK, for two years, then began a 33-year career in the Choctaw/Nicoma Park Junior High, teaching Physical Science to 8th and 9th graders. She ran the scoreboard clock for basketball and football games for many years. She was Choctaw Junior High Teacher of the Year in 1988. She served as the President of Delta Kappa Gamma (Women's Education Group). She retired from teaching in 2003.
She and Claire lived together beginning in 1985, and bought their first and only home together 34 years ago. Loving to travel, she made numerous trips with her sister, Claire. She and Claire travelled to all 50 states. One of her greatest passions was supporting and traveling to watch the OU Women's Basketball Team, being a member of the OU Fast Break Club. She and Claire won the first "6th Man" Award in 2011-12 from OU Women's Basketball. She loved dachshunds, and she and Claire have had 6 loveable companions, including her current dog, Heidi. She collected Golden Books, and antiqued everywhere. She was an avid photographer, and won photography awards at the county and state fairs. She met regularly with other USAO alums from her class, called the "Lunch Bunch", for the past 30 years. She also met the first day of school for lunch with other Choctaw retired teachers each year. Preceding her in death was her sister Claire. She is survived by her 3 “adopted” grandboys, Kade, Kasen, and Cole Turner as well as their Mother, Toni. She is also survived by a host of family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations can be given to the OU Women’s Basketball , http://link.ou.edu/PowellMemorial Program or Choctaw Nicoma Park Education Foundation.
