Obituary for Walter Cloren Johnson

Walter C. Johnson, beloved dad and granddad, passed away at home at the age of 89 on June 14, 2018. He was born November 11, 1923 in Hominy, OK to Cloren and Irene Johnson. Walter was a resident of El Reno at the time of his death and had developed many personal bonds and friendships during his three years in El Reno. You could always find him at Sid’s Diner for breakfast and later in the afternoon at Lincoln Park feeding the ducks with his dog, Princess, who saved his life by awaking him when his home caught fire in 2015.
Prior to living in El Reno, Walter was a long time resident of Midwest City where he was involved in the Boy Scout’s Last Frontier Big Tepee Chapter and MaNu Lodge Order of the Arrow. He was instrumental in the start up of the Big Teepee Veterans Day Flag Retirement Ceremony in Choctaw that began in the 1990’s and has continued to present day with more than 1,000 flags being retired each year. As a Scout leader he was recognized with Wood Badge Beads, the Silver Beaver Award, and the Order of the Arrow Virgil Honor.
Walter served in the Marines during the Korean War in radio technology. After his time in service he continued his career in communications retiring from SW Bell as equipment troubleshooter for the western half of Oklahoma.
Hobbies during his life time included HO Gauge Model Railroads with a 12’x18” layout, building remote control cars and trucks, and assembling 3D laser cut metal model kits. He assembled more than 1,000 of the 3D metal models the last two years of his life and took great pleasure giving his metal art away and seeing the joy it brought to others. He would share them with family and friends, along with the nurses and lab technicians while taking chemo treatments as well as leaving some in random spots for other patients to find and keep to brighten their day. His cheerful personality and positive outlook was inspiring to all as he never failed to tell everyone to have a good day when leaving a doctor’s office, the chemo lab or Dixie Diner and Sid’s his two favorite places for breakfast.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, and second wife Janis Johnson. Walter is survived by his first wife, Earlene Hall and their two children, Janet Raines of El Reno and Jerry Johnson of Muskogee; three grandchildren, Susan, Eric and Sara; and six great grandchildren.
Viewing will be Sunday, June 17, 2018, 8am-8pm at Barnes Friederich Funeral Home, 1820 S Douglas Blvd, Midwest City. Memorial service will be Monday, June 18, 2018, 3 pm at Arlington Memory Gardens Mausoleum Chapel.
