Obituary for Alferd "Don" Sparks

Alferd "Don" Sparks passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018 after years long battling various health issues. He spent his last days in the wonderful care of Hospice Quality Care, Del City, OK.

He was born October 29, 1938 in Elmore City, Oklahoma to George Nunley Sparks and Edna Dovey Dean Sparks. Don was fifth in line of seven children, and grew up in a struggling family. By the time he was in his teens, his older siblings were out of the home, and he worked long hard hours in cotton fields and corn fields alongside his father in order to earn money for the family. Every penny earned, went to the family. He learned to drive at the age of 12, and spent many days hunting with his older brothers.

He joined the 45th Infantry/Quartermaster Corps, OKC, OK on 21 Sept. ’54 (just 23 days before his 16 birthday) to 10 Oct. ’55. Followed by the USAR, OKC, OK on 11 Oct. ‘55 to 29 Dec. ’56; NTC, San Diego, CA. He served on the USS Halsey Powell; USS Conflict, USS John Adams, served at Comsubflot Six; Comsubpac; VT-23, NAS; Navy Recruiting District, OKC, OK. A Holland club member, someone who qualified in submarines for 50 years, he was a member of the following: VFW/Midwest City, USS Oklahoma City Base, United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI), USS John Adams, Minesweep Org., Tin Can Sailors, Oklahoma Submarine Base and Batfish Base Area Submarine Vets. Total years of service in the military were 23 + years, retiring as a Yeoman First Class. This was followed by 9 years on the Midwest City Police Department, Midwest City, OK from 1977 to 1986; retiring as a Master Patrol Officer, as a member of the Fraternal Order of Police. After retiring from the police department, he became a Private Investigator. He was a lightweight boxer, and member of a several baseball teams while serving in the Navy. Also, a self- taught Locksmith, and worked tirelessly on cars from a young age and throughout his years in the service, and several years afterwards. His favorite pastime was to load up the VW van with is fishing gear and take off to a lake to spend hours fishing.

Don was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and, great grandfather. He enjoyed attending events of his grandchildren, delighted in traveling with his beautiful life partner/wife Patricia, and reveled in spending time with family and friends.
Don was preceded in death by: his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia Diane Sparks; son, Jerry Stephen Sparks; Parents, George and Edna Sparks; Brothers, Mack Wayne, Ted Vannoh, and Glen Ray Sparks; and sisters, Lovie Helen Sparks Ryan, and Wanda Margaret Sparks Drew.

Don is survived by 2 children, Leonard Sparks (Joyce) of Midwest City, Okla.; and Davina Sparks Thomas (Jeff) of Yukon, Okla.; 8 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and 1 great grandchild on the way, and sister, Glenda Kay Green (Gary) of Sulphur, OK.
